In Gr. 10 one of our assignments was to write a letter to our future selves. It wasn't going to be marked, but we did have to complete the assignment, sort of a pass/fail. Recently (and by recently I mean several months ago) Josh D displayed his letter on facebook showing the world what Gr. 10 Josh looked like. Needless to say it was hilarious. I fished through my room and found mine, it was dated for 2010 (21st Birthday) which is when I had planned to open it. I was excited and also tinkering with the idea of throwing my own letter on facebook for the world to see what Gr. 10 Jon looked like.
Turns out 14 year old Jon fills 21 year old Jon with shame and embarrassment.
Although, there were some moments that I could not help but think to myself Gr. 10 Jon is pretty hilarious. This is how past jon started off his letter.
"Dear future self,
The year is 2004, Sept 16. You’re currently in Gr. 10 at Eden High. Your principals are Mr. Gillespie and Mrs. Kennerly (the terror of Gillespie) if you can’t remember them consider yourself lucky. Your sitting in Mrs. Scholz class who for some reason hates your flesh and bone. Just to get you updated with the times…"
and on it goes...describing what is happening in 2004, the way I chose to do this was by making a short list of movies that were currently in theater. This already shows where my priorities were. It then goes on to describes who my close friends were (I felt the need to point out who someone was dating then write "haha" beside it) along with a bunch of things "I should have done by 21".
Most of them I'm proud to say I completed, some I fell embarrassingly short of achieving, some I seem to have achieved in excess.
One thing is for sure, Gr. 10 Jon is better off where he is, and loves making lists of random things that 21 year old Jon does not need to know e.g.favourite shows, nicknames, best friends, good friends ...
If I write myself another letter, I will not be including a list of my favourite shows/movies and quotes, none of which I can remember... and I'll also ensure that I don't include a list of girls I have a crush on.
Not that I did before.
