On Thursday nights between 9 and 10 you could come on to floor JN3 in Sydenham hall and find it deserted. No worries, becuase we are not far.
Thursday nights Grey's Anatomy is on, and it's vital for each of our courses to take in the drama of Meredith and McDreamy along with learning more about the goings on at Seattle Grace Hospital. Were trying to make it count as an extra curricular but the people in charge aren't convinced. But I mean, were getting far more education in this 42 minutes of television + a bombardment of advertisements then a lecture could ever provide.
Obvs.
You see, we have a bit of a theme on our floor. All of us are in the Faculty of Health Science, which is made up of Kin, Nursing and Health Studies. Groups of people studying together in the same room, taking online quizzes back to back, and discussing the Abductor Pollicus Longus is just one of the many joys that JN3 (my floor name) has to offer.
My personal favorite is mid-term time. The majority of people are in Health Studies, and 4 of us are Nursing, and 1 is Kin.
The health studies students had a particularly difficult exam coming up so they all got together and began to study together as a group.
Not that bad of an idea.
Until the prof releases the answers, the next day and not their test results.
Immediately accusations were thrown around about who informed who of which incorrect answer. I believe the words "I'm so angry, I could kill somebody" was not said just once. Regardless it resembled what looked like to be the family from Arrested Development, which for me was fantastic.
I think in the end they all came out of it alright.
The point I'm trying to drive home here is that we are intense, about, learning. Med School is a hot topic, how much volunteering, what you need for marks, what each person is learning, what each person's marks are, etc.
Nursing is a different brand of intense.
Most people show up for class around 1-3 minutes early. That's the average.
Nursing, you need to show up 10 min early MINIMUM if you want enough seats available to sit with your friends. I don't know if people are sitting in their dorm rooms shaking with excitement, but you need to get yourself to class if you want to sit with people you know. Or not walk in the awkward last person that stands there like an idiot for 5 seconds peering around for the one extra seat hidden somewhere in the middle of a row. Cause why would it be on the end, that makes no sense.
E.g. My friends went to her class 10 min early, and it had already started, because everyone else was already there.
Let's recap.
1. She showed up 10 min early
2. Everyone else showed up BEFORE then, so around 15 min early.
3. The prof started, w/o her, because she hadn't showed up 15 min early.
We're creating a monster of punctuality that I simply can not combat.
And not only that, if you're walking slow on your way to class, your nursing comrades will just march on with out you. You are simply keeping them from reaching their nursing potential, you slug.
I thought the beauty of university was showing up and leaving whenever we saw fit.
Thanks a lot participation marks, mandatory attendance and the gung ho "show up 20 minutes early" students out there that are ruining this for the rest of us. Tomorrow I'm going to show up only 5 minutes early.
Take that...peers.
