The title of this post is the slogan of Camp Crossroads Day Camp 2009.
That's what I'm doing up here, rocking the day camp for 4 weeks beside Michaela and Becca. It's been a lot of fun, and surprisingly different from other Camp experiences. There are usually around a dozen kids in day camp more or less.
For whatever reason these kids are just not down with organized ANYTHING.
We try to play with the Earth Ball, they hate the Earth Ball.
Parachute games are good for about 10 min before the phrase "do i have to play?" or "i hate this" is said in a high pitched whiny voice.
Super encouraging for those of us who are running day camp.
There's nothing like putting a whole lot of time and effort into an activity only to have it declared boring and stupid within 5 seconds of hearing what were doing.
However, bring them down to the waterfront, DON'T make them play any organized game that is going on, and they will be play and be happy for hours and hours. It's a secret hidden recipe that we have started to embrace at Day Camp.
Reject the established order of how things usually work at Camp, and for whatever reason, for Day camp, it's a formula for success.
Just this afternoon it thundered so we had to wait a certain amount of time before we could go back in, in which time we decided to have a try at a game they were all playing at the waterfront.
Immediately complaints were aired and our kids began standing at the water front throwing dirt, rocks and digging random holes to pass time rather than play some kind of organized activity.
However, if you start building a sand castle, another recipe for success. Just start building something, and they are definitely in.
Resist the Established Order, Embrace the chaos.
Welcome to Day Camp
