So I'm here, in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The first day was just like a meet n greet type of deal, and the second was the longest intro to to community living ever. It was actually 2 days.
The base here is in a 4 story chalet/house/base complex. And there's about 4 different schools here right now. So there's over 130 people living here, and the Boarders DTS has 26 of them, half girls, half guys.
I love the group of people I'm with. It's Canadians, Americans, Aussies, Kiwis, Brits, Danishes? and Koreans. Were all very super relaxed about life. We all get the feeling that we don't realliy know what's going on. When we had to fill out a questionaire for Work Duties, we all just filled out what everyone else filled out. Typical behaviour.
Here's what you can expect when the Boarders show up.
-Were late, everytime.
There hasn't been one single meeting or anything scheduled where we haven't showed up late (except for when we meet to go to snowboarding, the only time we've ever revealed our punctuality skills)
-We prolong jetlag as long as possible, using naps as our main tool
-Were easily distracted
Everything is done in English and then translated to Korean, when the whole base is involved. Thus everything takes twice as long. But the Boarders DTS has come to a general consensus that were all super distracted by the Korean, to the point where we actually never listen to english, just korean. This proves troublsome when they expect us to actually do stuff.
-We mock eachother out consistently. This is mostly my fault. And also during the exclusive Boarders meetings, there's a good amount of mocking going on.
-We sit at the back, even if were the only ones there, we still sit at the back.
-And we are all way to excited to snowboard...at all times.
We went for our first time today, and it was the FIRST time we all showed up on time for something. It was incredible. So beautiful, so hilariou s, intense at moments and so fun. It has to be one of the best snowboarding days ever.
Picture 1 and 2 - One of the students here actually collided with a little girl (they're both ok). But he hit his head fairly hard and just to be safe they called a helicopter, being the loving compassionate people we are, we were there with him the entire time. That's my Aussie friend Steph. We figured he'd want a few kodak moments to remember it by.
Picture 3 - There's a couple T- Bars at the resort we went to and their super long. Most of us have never been on t-bars. This guy fell off twice, but he did manage to hold on and get dragged up the hill a good 50 m before falling off. amazing.
Picture 4 - View from the Gondola, near the base of the mountain.
It's my 4th day in and now I definitely feel more at home. It was a tad awkward before for sure, at one point I felt like this may have been the biggest mistake ever, but after today I definitely don't feel that way at all. Switzerland is beautiful, the people here, are great and hilarious. I'm starting to think this is only going to get better...hopefully.
Cheers.
